My path to becoming a practitioner started with my own healing journey. I first came to Functional Kinesiology looking for support with chronic fatigue nervous system regulation and number of remaining symptoms from long covid. The transformation I experienced was profound.Through muscle response testing, we were able to pinpoint and address hidden imbalances across various organs and identify specific food intolerances that were quietly draining my energy. But the biggest shift for me was how it completely reset my nervous system, moving me out of constant stress and back into a state of ease. Combined with the deep, gentle emotional work that kinesiology facilitates, I felt a level of physical and emotional alignment I hadn't felt in years.Experiencing first-hand how quickly the body can find its way back to balance when given the right support is exactly what inspired me to train in this work. I wanted to help others experience that same sense of relief, vitality, and coming home to themselves.
Functional Kinesiology is a gentle, holistic therapy that looks at the body as a whole system. Instead of just masking symptoms, we search for the root cause of physical, nutritional, and emotional imbalances. We combine traditional Eastern energy principles (like acupuncture meridians) with modern Western physiological sciences—using your muscles as a bio-feedback tool to see what your body needs to heal.
Yes! While Kinesiology has its roots in the ancient, time-tested principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the physical mechanism we use—muscle response testing—is deeply grounded in modern neuroscience and physiology. Here is how the science connects to your session:The Neurological Feedback Loop: Your muscles are controlled by your central nervous system. When I apply a very gentle pressure to a muscle, we aren't testing physical strength; we are testing your brain's ability to send a clear signal to that muscle under a minor stressor. If there is physical, chemical, or emotional stress stored in a corresponding pathway of your body, your nervous system momentarily "glitches," and the muscle yields. It is a real-time, physiological feedback loop. The Bio-Chemical Connection: Our bodies are incredibly integrated. Through the science of Applied Physiology, we know that specific muscle groups share neurological pathways with specific internal organs and acupuncture meridians. By testing these muscles, we can detect subtle energetic and functional changes in your organs long before they manifest as more serious physical issues. The Stress Response (The Nervous System): When your body is stuck in a chronic "fight or flight" (sympathetic) state due to stress, food sensitivities, or emotional strain, it affects your muscle tone, posture, and organ function. Kinesiology helps pinpoint exactly what is keeping your nervous system in this survival state, allowing us to actively shift you back into your "rest, digest, and heal" (parasympathetic) state.Ultimately, Functional Kinesiology bridges the gap between Eastern energetic medicine and Western anatomical science—allowing your own body to guide us to the root cause of imbalance.
Because Functional Kinesiology is an integrated therapy, its scientific backing comes from a combination of peer-reviewed research on muscle testing, clinical trials on patient outcomes, and established physiological science. Here is how the research stacks up:Scientific Validation of Muscle Testing (MMT): Manual Muscle Testing (MMT) has been extensively studied. Research published in peer-reviewed medical journals (including the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine and the International Journal of Neuroscience) has shown that muscle testing has a high rate of reliability and validity when used by trained practitioners to detect physical, chemical, and mental stress. It is a recognised neurological assessment tool that measures changes in the motor system in response to sensory stimuli.Clinical Studies on Health Outcomes: Clinical trials have investigated the real-world effects of kinesiology on various health conditions. Studies have demonstrated its clinical effectiveness in significantly reducing chronic lower back pain, managing emotional stress (using techniques like Neuro-Emotional Technique, a branch of kinesiology), and helping identify lifestyle and dietary triggers that contribute to gastrointestinal distress and fatigue. The Science of "The Fixes": While the diagnostic tool is muscle testing, the balancing techniques we use are firmly rooted in peer-reviewed science:Nutritional Science: Using dietary changes to support organ function and biochemistry.Neuro-lymphatic Massage: Stimulating specific points on the body to increase lymphatic flow and drain toxins, which is a well-documented physiological process.Vagal Nerve Stimulation: Activating the parasympathetic nervous system to lower cortisol (stress hormones) and reduce systemic inflammation.
A Transparent Note on Research: While there is a growing body of clinical evidence supporting kinesiology, it is a holistic, highly individualised therapy. Because every single session is uniquely tailored to the person sitting in the chair, rather than a standardised, "one-pill-fits-all" approach, it can be challenging to fit into traditional, rigid double-blind pharmaceutical trials. However, the physiological mechanisms we use every day to restore balance are entirely based on established anatomical and neurological science.
Not at all! Muscle testing is completely painless, non-invasive, and safe. It is not a test of your physical strength. Instead, I apply a very gentle, steady pressure to a muscle (usually your arm or leg) to see how your nervous system responds. If a muscle holds steady, the energy pathway is clear. If it yields under gentle pressure, it indicates stress or an imbalance in that corresponding area of the body. It’s like a direct conversation with your body's subconscious!
Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that you can move easily in. You will remain fully clothed throughout the session, but we will be gently moving your arms and legs to test different muscles, so trousers or leggings and comfortable socks are ideal.
Because we look at the whole body (structural, nutritional, and emotional), kinesiology can support a massive range of imbalances. Clients commonly seek help for:Chronic fatigue, low energy, and sleep issuesDigestive problems, food sensitivities, and bloatingHormonal imbalances, stress, and anxietyPhysical aches, pains, and structural tensionFeeling "stuck" emotionally or physically and wanting to regain vitality
Every body is entirely unique, so there is no one-size-fits-all answer. However, as a general guide, most clients notice positive shifts after their very first session, and we usually find that 3 to 6 sessions spaced a few weeks apart allow us to dig deep, address the root causes, and establish lasting balance.
At True North, they work beautifully hand-in-hand! Kinesiology allows us to identify exactly what your physical body is asking for (whether that is nutritional support, lymphatic drainage, or stress release). Wellness coaching then gives you the practical, real-world tools, mindset shifts, and supportive accountability to actually implement those changes into your daily life. It bridges the gap between what your body needs and how you actually live.
